CO Caspar (*1936) lives in Berlin and in Sweden. He is a datoist, (living 'today'), author, performer, tone-worker, photocopyist, and actor. He works as a soloist, workshop organizer, actionist, and musician with sound tools as installations, with projections, and with light-art. His medium is the processing of concrete tones and noises by means of digital equipment. Sound is planned as scenaric tone and speech acts, and is spontaneously developed from the original impulses of the sounding body - also in cooperation with other players. In the first period of his artistic work, he concentrated on the verbal and visual form of his performances. In recent years, he has increasingly devoted himself to aural concepts. In addition to solo appearances, he also produces music for theater, films, exhibitions, and readings.
His performance takes its form through the installation of sound objects in the given space, taking the architecture of the specific room into consideration. The playing never consists solely of sound, it includes physical interaction with the sound patterns developing uniquely during each performance, or in mutual interaction with other performers. In this process, he creates a great variety of moods.
Internally and externally, the dynamics of installation and action are an open system. Sound is experienced as the combination of idea, feeling, and inspiration, of understanding and control, of chance and turbulence, is the interplay of the coarse and the fine, of mechanical and digital equipment.The combination of archaic tone patterns and modern technical equipment is the basic principle of his compositional work.
The sounding bodies consist of industrial material such as pipes, hoses, turbines, and constructions of metal, plastic, and latex. They hang on chains and, independently and by means of manual influencing, develop vibrating and sometimes chance dynamics in accordance with the qualities of the materials. Turbines made of plastics, metal, and latex and, put under pressure by blowers, develop a vibrating dynamic of their own, varying in accordance with the characteristics of their material. Feedback systems effect acoustic loops; microphone articulation is the human component.
CO.CASPAR: FUN AM SCHRILLEN LAUSCHEN; CD:L.White Rec.: www@white - rec.de
"Fun am schrillen Lauschen" is a documentation of a livekonzerte 2002 in Arnstadt. The particular thereon is, that CO.CASPAR there performed with his son . According is the material also unlike as usual from him accustomed, maybe more rhythmical and spacy. Difficult to declare, but very atmospheric and good. We'll soon in the ZINNOBER-Mag. work together with CO.CASPAR. So there is the occasion, that he once more itself express to a few things. The CD appears in the folding pretty Din A5 format and is limited on 300.

CO.CASPAR: LABCOPILATION 2; CD: Paranoise Rec.: www.paranoiserecords.de
Here somewhat fine from the berlinian industrialpionier and Heidegger - admirer CO.CASPAR. That is a compilation of no more available pieces, which on various vinyl - singles have appeared, and now became again released by that hopefully new Cologne based label PARANOISE on CD. Here became pieces selected, on them with his typical sound CO.CASPAR interpreted between 1998 and 2003 lyrics in French, German and English. With it and maybe for collectors especially interesting is the legendary "Helix Of Exist" - Single on WKN, and two till now unpublished pieces. For me till now the best CO.CASPAR material represents (I know yet long ago not all) "Litany", a setting to music of the glory Satan by BAUDELAIRE. Furthermore "Thus Long Lights Light", "Aura Boreali " and "East end". The CD appears with poster!

reviews * chroniques ::
// Marie Pierre Bonniol - in Rock Sound n°66 (Fev 99)
Co Caspar might be one of those names you come across, but you never to seem to place right. Despite his age (born in 1936), he has released so far one CD (by Tesco) and now Kaon from France releases his second CD. I had the pleasure to see one of his concerts in 1990 in Newcastle (and of which a small portion is on this CD), and I remember a full stage of pipes and machines. Caspar in the middle doing his 'thing': rumbling with the machines, feedback singing/chanting and feeding sounds through pipes. Quite an impressive sound for one man. This CD is kinda like a retrospective. The oldest piece is from 1987 up until this year. Much of the work deals with voice manipulations, either fully treated (such as the live excerpt from 1990 or 'Spacial Lust Of Hearing'), or clearly spoken poetry by Shawn Caton. Some of these pieces have a religious undertone, like the processed gregorian choirs on "Great Is Theseus" or "Pink Machinary". Caspar is at his best when he mixes his sound installations with live elements and electronica. This is on pieces as the aforementioned "Spacial Lust Of Hearing" or "Fra Det Skjulte" (which was recorded in a Norwegian cave/bunker). Overall this is a nice presentation of the work of someone who is sadly ignored too much until now. // Fdw- in Vital Weekly vital@staalplaat.com
Latest CD from CO.Caspar, and his second release on the WKN subsidiary Hau!Ruck! Not that many people will have the first one though, since that 7”, featuring Shaun Caton’s poetry, was limited to a meagre 131 copies. In any case, this one isn’t so limited, and it doesn’t feature any poetry either. What it does have, on the opening track, is a gravelly and manipulated revolutionary address given by Lenin, which originated on an old Russian vinyl record. Over the words, and sped up and slowed down along with them, is a thin and rudimentary rhythm. The crackly nature of the track is discomforting enough, but this seems to be the intention since, as the insert with the CD explains, it represents the process and pain of giving birth and therefore should be ‘awful’. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it was ‘awful’, or painful – rather, as I imply, merely uneasy – but you get the idea. Anyway, it is supposed to stand apart from the rest of the CD, both in terms of sound, and in terms of the concept. The remaining pieces are constructed from ten basic sound-clips, and together symbolise the journey through life with all its different moods and associations. Plainly then, these tracks are quite varied, ranging from the lethargic rippled tempo of #4 (none of these have titles), to the simmering electric jumble and gliding ambiences that both make a mark on #6. Also popping up in different places are ghostly voices, resounding stabs, and cool hisses, but essentially, this is a disc of top quality dark industrial atmospherics. And while the moods are perhaps more obviously corrosive than on pervious Caspar releases, they’re still every bit as compelling.
Was damals analog begann, ist heute digital wirksam. All are released on different labels beside #6 & 8. LCP2 contains spoken poetry - on english, german, french - set to sound.' Es gibt also keinen mentalen Bruch. Niemand weiß, was dann ist. ................................................... Man will wiedererkennen das, was man schon kennt. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 16. +++++++++++++++++++++++++
The statement 'C.O. Caspar is Datoist' appears on the inlay to some of your recordings. Can you explain the word 'Datoist'? A DATOIST is an adherent of DATOISM, someone who believes in the DATO. The term 'dato' originates from the Latin 'datum' (English 'given'), and for 700 years meant 'to date a letter'. In later times it became a commercial term for 'today' – for example: 'out of date'; 'up to date'; 'have a date' – and in contemporary times it is used as in 'personal data', 'data processing', 'data glove' etc. So to be a DATOIST means to attempt to think and act in the spirit of the times, to live consciously at the border of the past and future, to accept the importance of tradition as well as the modern way, to merge knowledge with curiosity, to stay open to new and old values – or generally to deny the power of habit in thinking and exploring. Tradition and conservatism are important, so that people understand each other by the social codes, but DATOISM is likewise important for the further evolution of human spirituality. A good deal of your work involves live projects – sound installations and theatrics. Could you give some idea of what a C.O. Caspar event or performance might entail? It might serve as an answer to give the first three acts of a theatrical performance that combined workshop, installation, and performance. It was acted by five young actors searching for the Yeti (played by Caspar), and is a metaphor for the unknown, a bridge between myth and modernism. THE SEARCH FOR YETI I – Facing sideways on a small illuminated table, the audience take their seats. A storyteller tells a parable. II – Storyteller: 'FROM SUNKEN AGES RISE FORGOTTEN WORDS' In the unlit black silence, a boom resounds. From behind a crystalline wall outlines become visible in the blue aura – the Skaldic Bards, celebrating a mythical text. Noises, from muffled to shrill and expansive, sound in the background. The aura is quenched; its shadows become gigantic appearances. They squeak mythical words, skaldic proverbs. The archaic sounds swell to a howling storm wind. (Note: time knows no bounds, the illusion has already begun. The lightless vacuum between the eras is smashed by a boom – a leap into prehistory. Ice, as a metaphor for the eternal, and fire – their words live in us since those sunken ages.) III – A white projection appears on the wall, the crystalline light disappears, the forms in the ice become clear, the wind ebbs to a quiet buzzing whistle. The storyteller names the titles and participants: 'AND CREATION CONTINUES FOR ALL ETERNITY'. The forms penetrate the ice wall, becoming real – visions of arctic landscapes – and become one. Someone recites. In the ice, an outline becomes visible – Yeti. It steps through a fissure, wanders, stirs up white leaves. The wind swells to a storm and Yeti withdraws into the ice. People and researchers seek, collect, wander aimlessly – and hate. The last vision is of a huge, glowing sun on the horizon. (Note: the announcement of the title breaks the ice. Illusions occur as fictional reality. Yeti – the alien and unknown. Freedom provides the human with material. Life, nature, and the universe – human, landscape, sun – ARE. They were in harmony. The Yeti in the humans allows collapsing. It struggles against its existence, against its spirit, against its origin. Its illusion and wilfulness produce the climax.) You develop many of your own 'sound tools'. Could you mention some examples? The TVN (Tubevioline) is a sound-tool made of sheet metal, steel, and aluminium purchased in a hardware store, assembled, screwed, and riveted. The sound comes from the material itself, and is picked up rather than acoustic. It is created by plucking, rapping, caressing, scratching, or rubbing with a polyester bow – or by means of the voice. The RSL (Rohrschleuder, or 'tube-whirler'), SKN (Schlauchknatter, or 'hose- cackler'), and M/DBL (Mono/Dubble Blower) are sound-tools made of blowers, polyester tubes and hoses, latex membranes or hoses, and steel bars and chains – again, purchased in a hardware store, assembled, screwed and riveted. They light up yellow, electrically synchronised with their volume. The sound comes directly from the material, and is regulated by compressed air flowing rhythmically, multi-frequentially atonally, or randomly polyphonically. The sounds are purely acoustic and/or are amplified by a microphone. They are played by manipulating the latex or suspension. The pneumatics alternate between a duo, trio, or multiplex system. The WTS (Wind-Tones-Steel) is a hanging, open-air installation that uses the wind to provide the impulses for producing sound. It consists of nine suspended sheets of flexible steel (75cm X 100cm). The distortion of their forms can be experienced acoustically. Using a pickup, the impulses can also be electronically modified. Some of these 'sound tools' seem quite elaborate. Are they constructed mainly for the visual impact they may have, or is the aural impact just as important? When performing live, is the movement as important as the music, or does one aspect compliment the other? Before I started my public work in 1980, I worked as a photographer, painted on canvass, made graphics by copy-machines, and constructed visual objects in the style of object trouvee. It is from that time that my first designs for the vibrating sound-tools originate – for visual as well as aural impact. Because of the weak suspension and the spin of the machines, they moved – and in a semi-controlled way they developed a vibrating dynamic and movement of their own, that varied in accordance with the characteristics of their material. Thus, the playing never consists solely of sound, but includes physical interaction with the unique sound patterns that develop during each performance – or mutual interaction with other performers. Do you use your 'sound-tools' for studio recordings as well? Yes, since the technical possibilities and lower costs of the equipment allow for good quality recording. Before – during the '80s – the atonal sound-acts and performances were recorded and released on cassette. Now the sound-tools, the raw material for live performances, and the diverse, purely acoustic sounds, can be worked up by means of amplification and changes in analogue and digital to give dry and distorted sounds, noises, minimalistic symphonies, and ambient cyberspectra. The manipulation is achieved by means of digital effect processors and the computer. Do you ever use more conventional instruments? When I was young I liked to play saxophone, but living in East Berlin meant there was a lack of money and time, so I couldn't learn it. That was okay, because my musical sensitivity wasn't disciplined by a coded education. For this reason, and by my own self-assessment, I don't feel like a musician in the way I work – more like a performing sound-artist. Jazz and classical – and of course rock 'n' roll – were my main interests in those days. You are happy to describe your own music as 'industrial'. When did you first become aware of 'industrial music', and what do you understand by the term? In 1980 I had a pub in Berlin (by the way, the abbreviation 'COC' originates from this pub, which was called COC80, and means 'Care of Caspar') and there I played sounds from the awaking atonal era like TG, Test Department, XTC, Chrome, Einstürtzende Neubauten, Diamanda Galas, etc. At the time, it was the only location in Berlin playing these sounds. Also, for a Norwegian sound magazine, I interviewed such experimental working musicians. They used industrial thrash as a sound source, and synthetic noises in a more extreme way than consumers accept nowadays. At that time it was a very new and unique musical treat – and not least, a reaction to the escalation of the Cold War. So the term 'industrial sound' was created, and what I am doing, I have actually been doing in the last 23 years – though, of course, always improving my knowledge and material. Before the industrial era there were only natural noises, a very normal thing which the people enjoyed. Now, through the process of time – evolution – we have industrial noises, also a very normal thing, but one which the people dislike. Humans can psychologically accept visual changes more easily than acoustic ones. The acoustic way to the future is much longer than the visual one. In November you played at the HauRuck! festival in Vienna, alongside bands such as Tribe of Circle, Novo Homo, I-C-K, Of the Wand and the Moon, Novy Svet, Mushroom's Patience, and others. It seemed an unlikely set of bands for you to be associated with in many ways. Of course, like you, they all had music released by Albin Julius' HauRuck! label – but is this the only link, or do you feel there is a shared philosophy or common set of interests as well? Yes, that is the only link – besides the atmosphere and great experience of these events, and the friendship I feel for Albin Julius. My philosophy also includes Babylon as the orbit. How did the audience – which I gather was mostly gothic – respond to what you played at the festival? I am fortunate to be able to say that the audience applauded enthusiastically. The following is a short comment from a report written by :Bastiaen: (I forget the name of the mag): "CO.Caspar started off with its strange noises. The guy behind the project was a somewhat older bald man who looked a bit like Pim Fortuyn, without the tie of course! Some sort of ambient noise was created out of really strange self-made (?) machines and devices. Unique, and it sounded good as well." Do you think an association with this kind of 'industrial scene' could mean your work is regarded less 'seriously', or does it matter at all? I like the ambience of the 'industrial scene', and I think it is a very good setting in which to perform my tools and sound. How others regard it, I don't care. Or should I regard performing there less 'seriously'? Absolutely NOT. It doesn't bother me whether I play in the Philharmonic Orchestra or in a small rotten cellar. The task of establishing a show in a special space and expecting a new experience is the priority. Crying, unfriendly, and hidebound people I dislike. Do you listen to music in your spare time? If so, do you think it has any bearing on your own work? Yes I do, from Palestrina to Cage or currently, for example, Merzbow – whatever fits my mood, but I don't listen to commercial radio stations or 'music' like they play in the shopping centres. Good is what one likes, and not only what one prefer. Sure I am influenced and inspired by what I hear, including the sound from the street, in factories, and in nature. All is saved in the unconsciousness. My way of working in the studio or on stage is very spontaneous, with the idea, feeling, or concept in the background. So, what bearing passive listening has on my active work is hard to analyse. Ideas and inspirations are like birds – sometimes they stay, other times they fly away. Not only music is inspiring, but also everyday inputs from, for example, the subway, the supermarket, road work, ceremonies in a church, or from a poem, a text, a talk, a political discourse on the TV, an impressive event, or simply a vision – in a nutshell, the world in full of inspiration. Your first CD release was on Tesco in 1994 after you had music on an ND cassette. Was releasing a CD something you thought you wanted to do at the time, or was it merely suggested to you as a possibility by Tesco? Yes to both, and I was very happy that Tesco asked me if I wanted to release a CD. I had several cassettes on my own private label, LABCoCLANG, which I sent to ND, and they were reviewed by Michael Northam. So Tesco became aware of me via ND. During the period between '88 and '94 I was totally engaged in theatre – I nearly lost contact with the international experimental scene, and was badly informed about it. Another reason for this, besides the fact that I mostly worked in art-performance, was Berlin's hermitic political situation. Strangely enough, I guessed I was the only one working in the way I do. I recently read some reports about me as a 'newcomer'. I have to thank Tesco for the opportunity of having my first release, CHoCH, and since then the name CO. Caspar has gradually become more noticed. Much of your earlier recorded output was a result of installations and live performances, but you have recently been spending more time on studio work. Is this a trend you think will continue? Do you have a preference either for working live, or for working in the studio? I work on three levels: one is a very physical performance, expressed by my body and voice; the second is the acoustic-material performance by the objects; and the third is the electronics. Nowadays the electronics are utmost in the consciousness of our time. Therefore, spending more time on studio work is the consequence of clang now having the priority, and so the work becomes more and more complex. As well as releasing recorded live events, I also extract clips from them for new base-material, and/or play the tools in the studio, and merge, manipulate and finalise everything on the computer. There is no real preference. Working live depends on the relatively few engagements I have (for many reasons), and working in the studio with *.wavs, *.jpgs, *.txts, or *.avis, takes up the rest of my time – outside my private life. Do you plan studio work in advance, or do you just let 'things' happen? If you mean 'planning in advance' as planning in the head – then yes. However, for the realisation of a recording, I just let 'things' happen according to inspiration and with the help of some annotations. Acts on stage are planned as structured, time-based concepts – what tool to play, the effects, the texts, the change of outfit, and also the movement. That is the framework, along with the main parameters from entrance to exit. I often use video screenings, shot and mixed by me, to complement the acting and for timing. If possible, the light-mixer gets instructions for changing the spotlights as well as the sound mix. Then I improvise in mutual cooperation with, respectively, the tool, the audience, and the ambience of the site – OptoSonicProjects. How do you gauge the success, or otherwise, of a release? How is success gauged? There is no code or common understanding for what I do; I have no style, no target group, no accepted instrumentation. It is generally said that all communication is linked to a common code, and if people don't have that – if the code from the producer is not the same as the recipient's (on all levels of exchange), if the offer does not relate to the expectation – then there is no mutual understanding. What is the borderline between one's outward and inner expectation? How much must an artist prostitute himself to appeal to the audience, to be accepted, or to win applause? The only solution is to do what one likes best – and so that is what I do. Monoprints of heads, and prints of heads in cross-section, appear prominently on the artwork with your releases. Is this of any significance? The head – or rather, the spirit in one's head – has absolute priority in defining who one is. One type of person is more or less split in the soul, the other type lives in harmony with the soul. The head with the veins, nerves, and synapses, is a metaphor for spirituality. The head is also a metaphor for existence, for eternity, for life and death, and last but not least, for creativity. The split head represents the ambivalence of all being – a kind of Yin-Yang – and ultimately evolution, including my own. That applies also to the abbreviation 'CO' – 'care of' – on one hand there is me living in my privacy, and on the other hand there is he, living his artistic life in public. Often, when I listen to the visual or audio recordings of Co.Caspar, I wonder if it was the same person as the one sitting at home reading a book, or doing nothing but contemplating. Can you explain more what you mean by "One type of person is more or less split in the soul, the other type lives in harmony with the soul"? Some humans live in harmony with themselves (calm, relaxed, like a Buddhist) and have found an inner stability by, for example, mediating, sport, wandering, living in nature, etc. Others feel a tension – for example, want silence, but can't stay alone; some like the theatre, but can't stand the mentality of actors; won't drink, but must drink… There are thousands of examples. Sensible men feel and note these contradictions inside – a conflict between what you want and what you can have. I strive to stay within this tension, to be split in my mentality, never to feel really satisfied, but at the same time to feel calm in my nucleus and to feel sure of what I do. That is the meaning of my logo as well – the split head. The Fra De Skjulte 1 LP used sounds recorded in an old fuel tank in Norway. The original plan was for a series of five LPs, but there has been some delay. I know FDS2 is due in 2003, but is it still intended that there will be five LPs? The plan for a series of five LPs will be realised, but time is the big problem. You have performed the FDS installation at least three times, I think, since 1987 – and indeed a version of FDS appears on the Thus Long Lights Light CD. Are the sounds on the LP remixed from older recordings, or are they completely new recordings? The original material is about four hours long, and was recorded in 1987 and 1993. The track on TLLL is an extract from that, but I don't know from which part, regrettably. The five releases will be a chronological remake of the entire material. The images on the front cover all originate from my graphic period, but some are reworked on the computer. Each release will be an edition of 300, with the covers of the first 30 copies being original graphics signed by hand, while the other 270 will be one image, unsigned. You contributed sounds to a recent Mnortham recording. What do you think of the results? Oh yes! The mix was merged very well, so I can't differentiate between his sounds and my contribution. The music has a beautiful ambient mood, soft with elegance, but also driving – a calm floating performance. Good! Regrettably the technical realisation was sometimes (especially on track 1) disturbed by analogue noises in the background, partly due to too low a dynamic, so one has to turn up the volume (and the noise). It could have been normalised better, but nevertheless I like it with ear-phones. You have also issued music on your own LABCoCLANG. Do you have any intentions to develop LABCoCLANG as a label proper, or will you keep it solely for releasing your own music on CDr? LABCoCLANG is a kind of store, a virtual label to save raw material from the past waiting for a remake, and new recordings. The label is also a place to save finalised masters, waiting for an official release on a professional label, and to compile contributions to diverse compilations. Sometimes I mull over the possibility of printing and releasing the stuff myself, but then I shrink back from the trouble of distributing it, organising the mail order, and collecting it. That would take too much time from producing it properly. The most desirable thing would be for a professional fan-label to take over the job. One of the LABCoCLANG CDrs was a collaboration with Inox Kapell called Bach Fugen. I personally thought there was some pretty amazing music on that. Did Bach Fugen ever get a 'proper' CD release subsequently? Yes, by Welt am Draht. To explain the name Bach Fugen: it is not an interpretation of any fugue of the great Johann Sebastian. The name as well as the track titles should only express the heterogeneous nature of the recordings, and are, of course, a little black joke – it was all done live in two days. Who is Inox Kapell? You did another project with him as well didn't you – Subterranian Spots in Valpodia? Can you say something about this? He is an insectoid multi-media artist, showman and entertainer. He looks like an insect and plays old analogue instruments, either found on trash-heaps or bought at the flea-market. Apart from our collaborations his work is totally unrelated to mine, but he is very flexible, so our studio and live collaborations are very productive, with good results. Incidentally, he is the only one I play regularly with. The sounds we produce together are different to what we do solo. To date we have produced seven session-masters, of which five are finalised. The sessions are mostly arranged spontaneously, and the recording takes place over two or three days. Subterranian Spots in Valpodia was realised in an underground gallery called Valpodia. You also have plans to provide music for text and poems, similar to the work you've done with Shawn Caton. Can you tell us some more about this project? Have you been working on it already? Will you be using material by poets besides Shawn Caton? Shaun Caton is an excellent poet, whose poems I like tremendously. They are read by an American friend and recorded. I have, for years, plans to compile a musical translation of all the texts on CD – but to date there have 'only' been four interpretations on compilations, even though I am fascinated by the idea. There must be a knot in my brain I can't cut, but the pressure is becoming stronger, so I hope I will be able to do it soon. Another interpretation I did was with a text by Bernhard Minetti, a genius actor. The short text is taken from an interview about his experiences as an actor given when he was 83 years old. Another ongoing project is the intonation of poems by Charles Baudelaires. He was a fascinating poet who lived in the period of transition between the agricultural age and the industrial revolution, like we live on the border between mechanical and digital culture. The spirit of the time should be expressed through the arts. Finally, the raw recording of twelve poems read by Canadian painter Jeanne de Chantal is done. You also mentioned using the work of philosophers. Which ones do you most admire? What is that – 'to admire somebody'? I am very impressed and often unconsciously inspired and influenced by great thinkers or artists like Aristotle, Samuel Beckett, Buddha, Echnaton, Max Ernst, H.R. Geiger, G.M. Hull, S.W. Hawkins, Heidegger, Emanuel Kant, etc. Aristotle is the founder of our natural sciences; Echnaton the founder of our occidental religious and cultural tradition; Kant the father of the rational antimagic-mythical explanation of the world; Hull and Hawkins are great examples of a strong will; Ernst and Geiger stand for the complexity of inspirations; Buddha for the endeavour for inner harmony – and so on. By reading these I get a more complex impression and understanding of what it means to live and die, why through the aeons mankind always recycles behavioural patterns despite all rational evolution. I did read a few works by those mentioned (more is too much brain-storming), but the secondary literature contains enough information. Would putting philosophical words to music be the best way to convey such ideas? Do you want to get across any particular message or idea anyway? Putting philosophical words to music? Not yet, maybe later – but by the knowledge of their thoughts, maybe my own thinking and doing will unconsciously be influenced. Many concrete and abstract inspirations occur through reading, but that is very, very personal and not something to discuss. You have worked in the past as a teacher, photographer, and electrical engineer. Do you still pursue any of these interests? Yes, I think so. From my time as a teacher, my interest in psychology and antique history; from photography, the way to design the covers, the installations, and on the whole, my visual judgement; and from the engineering and technical interests come my feelings for and pleasure in the technical equipment, including the computer. A very real wish is to work more with photography, but more than pressing the button. So the compromise is to use the machine to randomly collect images or documentation for the presentations on the homepage. Periodically priorities have to change, otherwise one goes to sleep. You have seen many changes during your time living in Berlin – any thoughts on this? Do you think it has affected your work? That is a long story, and perhaps a good foundation for what I do. When I was young Berlin was bombed day and night. I often experienced the air raid alarms – in the cellar you feel the ground shaking under your ass, the plaster falls down from the walls, the lights go out or flicker. Then after the bombing we went out. The town smelt of smoke. New ruins were where houses were before. People cried because they were wounded, and so on – a typical war situation. I played in the ruins with my friends – an adventure for us. We also lived in the ruins. Later there was the Cold War between East and West, and the political situation in Berlin was transformed very quickly. There was always the feeling of war – to live there was to live with risk, with political risk, with psychological risk. All the time, one was controlled by the Eastern police. In one sense we didn't care what happened, because it was normal. Then the wall came down, but that didn't impress me so much – it was only the continuation of history. To live here from a very young boy to a man influenced my "existential" feelings and my work – but there is no single event, other than simply living here. I love this crazy town! How do you see your art and music evolving in the future? There is no perspective – the future will be a kind of global apocalyptic disaster. My visual and audio work – the OptoSonicProjects – will grow and develop synchronized with the spirit of the times (I hope), but I can't foresee what sounds or instruments, what interests or changes, what new correlations or simply black- outs, will come to pass. Perhaps the audience will become bored by the un-visual sounds on the stage, and will search for audio visuality, visual audibility, complex multimedia entertainment, performed music or sonic performances, will want enthusiasm instead of coolness, glow instead of ice, or on the other hand, more darkness instead of light, minimalism instead of complexity. We will hear and see! Come what may – that's Datoism!
